The three short songs on California beatsmith Shlohmo’s new EP, Vacation, left many fans of his 2011 masterpiece Bad Vibes hungry for more. The 12″ version of that EP – out today – does a bit to satisfy that desire, featuring remixes by Airhead, Salva, and Groundislava, but the most satisfying is Nicolas Jaar’s sweetly delicate take on Rained the Whole Night. Jaar pairs a bluesy guitar riff with some distant drums, and manages to preserve much of the economy of the original. It’s a hair more precise and more percussive than the original, and lacks a lot of the glitchy crackle that makes Bad Vibes so exciting, but on the whole it’s a nice variation on the “beat music” genre.
